As London’s leading fully co-educational school, with 1,400 girls and boys (11 to 18-year-olds) of very individual characters, Latymer Upper School is not a ‘one size fits all’ school. ‘Modern’, ‘traditional’, ‘academic’, ‘caring’, ‘ambitious’ and ‘grounded’ are some of the words most commonly used to describe the School. Latymer is indeed all of these things and more, focussing as it does on both the academic achievement and the personal development of each and every pupil into well-rounded and caring citizens of the future.
Part of the School’s strength and lasting identity is due to the enduring observation of Latymer’s original ethos, which continues to shape all those who study at the site on King Street in Hammersmith. The story of the 17th century lawyer Edward Latymer bestowing part of his great wealth on a grant to educate ‘eight poore boyes’ from Hammersmith has almost mythical status at the School and is celebrated every year on Founder’s Day.
Edward Latymer’s legacy is also seen in the School’s ongoing bursary campaign, Inspiring Minds, the aim of which is to raise enough funds to offer one in four pupils a means-tested bursary, making Latymer one of the most socially inclusive schools in the country. Alongside a broad and stimulating curriculum and dedicated teaching, Latymer offers first-class facilities and a plethora of musical, artistic and sporting opportunities beyond the classroom.
In Year 7 pupils are assigned to one of 10 tutor groups of between 16-18 pupils. These tutor groups are divided into seven teaching groups of 24 pupils and children will always have at least three other pupils who are in both their tutor group and their teaching group. This allows small groups for pastoral care whilst allowing pupils to meet and get to know more of their year group in different contexts.
Pupils are issued with Chromebooks in Year 7 which they take home every night. Pupils certainly won't spend the majority of time on their Chromebooks, but they are used in lessons where appropriate, bringing many benefits including an understanding of digital literacy as well as the technologies that enhance both learning and collaborative productivity.
In the first two years at Latymer, we aim to provide a broad and stimulating curriculum that exposes our students to the widest possible range of subject disciplines to inspire their future learning choices.

Each year group spends an afternoon a week participating in formal sport at our Wood Lane complex, as well as having one period a week of PE on site.
Year 9 marks an exciting and important stage in our students' education as they move up to the Middle School. New form groups are created and a second Modern Language – German or French – is added to the subjects studied.
Pupils also study Latymer's bespoke Global Goals course where they explore the UN's sustainability goals and, in small groups, investigate practical steps and projects they can put into action that address the goal of their choice. In the Spring Term of Year 9, pupils select their GCSE subjects.
In Years 10 and 11 our pupils study 10 GCSE courses and our own, tailor-made World Perspectives course, an interdisciplinary curriculum drawing on the disciplines of Geography, Politics and Economics to develop a broader understanding of the issues affecting the world today.
Core (required) subjects are English and English Literature, Mathematics, two of the sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), a Modern Language and the internally assessed World Perspectives course.
Optional GCSE subjects are chosen from Biology/Chemistry/Physics, French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Latin, Greek, History, Geography, Computer Science, Religious Studies, Drama, Design, Art and Music.
Most subjects will follow the International GCSE course, which offers a broad and thorough foundation for A Level. Pupils continue to have an afternoon of Games every week.
The Sixth Form is a chance to try something new. Whether moving up from our own Year 11 or joining Latymer from another school, our students can look forward to an innovative curriculum and fresh experiences that will enrich their final two years of school. The privileges of senior status in the School bring with them responsibilities too: service, leadership and co-curricular involvement are integral to Sixth Form life and are recognised and rewarded under our distinctive Latymer Diploma programme.
We offer an exciting new curriculum that takes account of both the changes to A Levels and university expectations, and also the need to educate students for the complex, interconnected and ever-changing world beyond school. We want our students to be academic, rounded and grounded, to exemplify the Latymer Learner Profile through developing into independent, reflective learners who work as hard for others as they do for themselves.
Excellence and opportunity
Our Sixth Form curriculum gives students the chance to explore their passions in greater depth as well as investigate some new subjects. This is a time when students can spread their intellectual wings and explore new areas and ways of working that will help them in their transition to higher education and the world beyond studying. We offer a plethora of short courses to stimulate their curiosity, and provide plenty of opportunities to take on leadership roles that reflect their position in the School.
