All boys and girls who sit the 11+, or boys who sit the 13+ examinations in the January preceding entry will be considered for Academic Scholarships; their performance in the examination, their school report and their interview will all be taken into consideration.
Scholarships are also available for the most able candidates in Music, Drama, Sport, STEAM and Art: additional assessments will be required for these awards.
Scholarships normally provide a remission of 5% of the tuition fees per year. Music, Drama, STEAM, Sport and Art
Types offered
The Music School includes a recital hall with two Steinway grand pianos, an ICT suite with 15 Apple Macs, seven teaching/practice rooms with Yamaha and Boston pianos, and well-resourced facilities for Music Technology, including a recording studio. Large-scale events are held in the Boyd Campbell Hall and in other local concert venues, including the Ryan Theatre and St. George’s Headstone. Organists have access to the three-manual pipe organ in St Mary’s Parish Church.
A Music Scholar will:
- Already have a passion and commitment for music.
- Show great enthusiasm for becoming actively involved in the subject.
- Be able to play an orchestral instrument to at least Grade 4/5 standard at 11+.
- Offer a second instrument and/or be able and willing to sing.
- Have been awarded high marks in formal music examinations.
- Have been involved in musical activities such as orchestras, bands or choirs.
At 13+, the instrumental standard is Grade 5/6 and to be working towards, or have passed, Grade 5 Theory of Music.
A Music Scholar at The John Lyon School will be expected to:
- Be fully involved in the extra-curricular musical activities, both instrumental and choral, at the Director - of Music’s discretion.
- Be prepared to study GCSE Music.
- Be prepared to offer a number of solo performances each year and to contribute to House Music events.
- Demonstrate appropriate progress by maintaining regular practice.
- Set an example to other pupils through involvement in musical activities.
- To attend music lessons on a weekly basis.
The School is represented at district, county and national level in a wide range of activities, including cricket, badminton, tennis, athletics, football and cross country.
The School has excellent facilities: a 25-metre swimming pool; well-equipped sports hall; fitness studio; indoor and outdoor cricket nets; and hard-court area on-site, as well as our own attractive pavilion and 65 acre sports fields at Sudbury.
Sport Scholars will have either have experience of playing at a very high level (Football Academy, County or Development Squad), be able to make a significant contribution to a range of sports or demonstrate the potential to develop into an outstanding athlete in their time at the School.

A Sport Scholar at The John Lyon School will be expected to:
- Perform at the highest level in curriculum PE and Games.
- Recognise the School will have first priority on their extra-curricular time.
- Make a significant impact when representing the School.
- Assist in any way to develop sport at the School.
Performing Arts are an acknowledged strength of John Lyon. The School has invested significantly in both staff and facilities. Our performances are of an exceptional standard. There are opportunities for pupils in all years to perform publicly or in front of their peers. Repertoire is carefully selected, and a large amount of productions are held in the course of a year from a wide variety of genres and theatrical styles.
John Lyon has an extensive and hard-earned reputation for excellence in Drama, both as an after school or lunchtime activity and as a curriculum subject. There are excellent Drama facilities including two fully equipped Drama studios with digital lighting and sound facilities. In each academic year there is a full scale musical production, a performance as part of the National Theatre Connections Scheme and a performance as part of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation. There are also further opportunities to perform in the Year 7 Drama Festival and of course in the final GCSE and A-Level performance examinations. Our state of the art theatre technology allows students with a keen interest in the technical aspects of theatre to learn valuable skills and to excel in this area if they choose to do so.
Drama Scholars often have vastly different experiences and backgrounds. Some will have been very successful in graded examinations; others will have had more informal experiences. To assist you in making your decision it might be useful to consider the following:
A Drama Scholar will:
- Have a passion and commitment for drama and theatre.
- Show great enthusiasm for becoming more actively involved in the subject.
- Have taken lead roles in school productions if the opportunities have been available.
- Have been awarded high marks in any formal drama exams, if these have been taken.
- Show outstanding commitment, enthusiasm and ability if drama clubs and societies have been attended.
- Show a genuine interest and enthusiasm for live theatre if taken on visits.
A Drama Scholar at John Lyon will be expected to:
- Perform at the highest level in curriculum drama.
- Opt to take GCSE Drama and A-Level Drama & Theatre Studies.
- Take part in at least one extra-curricular drama activity per term.
- Help promote drama in Open Days and other key events.
- Attend a termly meeting to review progress.
The new STEAM Laboratory and STEAM Makerspace offer an incredible range of opportunities to students, such as 3D modelling, 3D printing, soldering, laser cutting and Robotics. STEAM scholars will be expected to be excited at the prospect of being involved in such projects,
A STEAM Scholar will:
- Already have a passion for Science
- Show great enthusiasm for becoming actively involved in the School’s STEAM projects
A STEAM Scholar at John Lyon will be expected to:
- Be fully involved in the weekly extra-curricular STEAM activities, such as the Robotics and CREST clubs.
- Take part in the termly STEAM competitions. Past STEAM competitions have involved building spaghetti bridges, balloon cars and cardboard chairs.
- Set an example to other pupils through involvement in STEAM activities.
- Meet the Head of STEAM termly to review progress.
Art and Design is a subject that is integral to the curriculum here at John Lyon. As a valued subject that only becomes optional at GCSE and A level, all students have access to the department. A scholar makes full use of the excellent facilities available within the department
Art works closely with other departments including, STEAM, Music and Drama as many of our students show skills across range of artistic areas. Within the department there is a full range of photographic equipment alongside the darkroom. We teach Ceramics and Textile design. The department is fully equipped with the latest Computer Design facilities. This allows a student to follow their own personal passion as well as developing new skills beyond the School timetable.
Students who study Art often go on to Art College to pursue a career in Art and Design. Architecture is both a popular career choice, which we are particularly successful in gaining places at top universities.
An ART Scholar will:
- Already have a passion for Art and Design
- Have built a portfolio of Artworks, including sketchbooks, to present on the interview scholarship day
- Show great enthusiasm for becoming actively involved in the School’s Art projects
- Be willing to develop new areas of study beyond their preferred discipline in Art and Design
An Art Scholar at John Lyon will be expected to:
- Be fully involved in the weekly extra-curricular ART activities, Scholar sessions and Art clubs along with open studios
- Take part in the termly Art competitions
- Aim to take GCSE and A level Art in the future
- Set an example to other pupils through involvement in Art activities particularly moving up the school
- Meet the Head of Art termly to review progress
